Dr. Kusuda was born in Newark, New Jersey. He received a BES in Bioengineering in 1977 from Johns Hopkins University and went on to receive his Medical Doctorate from Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri, in 1981. In 1986, he completed his Urology Residency Program at Oakland Naval Hospital in Oakland, California. He completed a fellowship in Urologic Oncology at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York in 1993.
In 2007, he retired from the US Navy with the rank of Captain and had been on staff at the Eastern Virginia Medical School at the rank of Associate Professor. He is Board Certified through the American Board of Urology and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. Dr. Kusuda is a member of the American Urological Association, Society of Government Services Urologists and the Oregon Medical Association. Dr. Kusuda is an extra class amateur radio operator and is active with Coos County Amateur Radio Emergency Services.
